eBay mandates UPC codes, and specific brands can no longer select “Does not Apply”
We are currently encountering some problems when publishing listings for specific brands. “For new products of certain brands, it seems that ‘Does not Apply’ cannot be used as the UPC code,” a seller said.
A seller received an error message when relisting a product:
It looks like there’s a problem with this listing.
Calvin Klein products have a registered UPC. Please enter a valid UPC that matches your item.

While eBay has in the past required sellers to add UPC codes for new and refurbished products, it also allows sellers to use the “Does not apply” option. However, last weekend, a seller said in the eBay discussion forum:
“I don’t want every listing to need to enter a UPC code. At present, it seems that only special brands (Disney, Calvin Klien, Ralph Lauren) require a valid UPC code. It’s time for sellers to find UPC codes for all inventory products, otherwise they will More passive.”
Some sellers do not understand eBay’s regulations and believe that buyers will not search for products through UPC codes. But by improving the UPC code, eBay’s “structured big data” can create a platform product catalog to better recommend products to shoppers.
At present, eBay only requires new or refurbished products to fill in UPC codes, and there are no regulations for old products.
